I’m Charlotte Naylor Davis, biblical scholar, nerd, sci fi enthusiast, metal head, feminist, person of faith, disabled person, translation critic.
My main conviction in my academic work is this: Texts are communicative events.
– what they ‘do’ and what we are doing with them is of primary importance in my work.
My scholarship orbits the bible, that’s the gravitational pull.
Because of my history, interests etc ethical and moral debates, feminism and marginalisation are always in view.
My methods aim to be deliberately intersectionally feminist – that is I am seeking to disrupt and resist structures (of thought, analysis or practice) which create hierarchies and/or oppress and do violence to the vulnerable.
I’ve been in academic biblical scholarship for about 10 years – MA, PhD and teaching. I was a community worker before that working with young people at risk, and with churches. These things influence my scholarship, writing and passions.
I will be using this site to connect with my Patreon – www.patreon.com/MetalBiblicalScholar – which I use to raise funds for my ongoing scholarship. Disability has made me want to find new and more accessible ways for people who are marginalised to BE scholars not just access the work of others.
Also as a female scholar with a disability it can be hard to find ones voice, or confidence (for reasons I’m sure I will write about here) so I’m using it for that.
Here you will find the beginnings of thoughts and the work that doesn’t fit elsewhere – long form responses to current debates on twitter for example.
I’ll link between sites and all the bits of work I do. I’ll probably get some other people on here from time to time too.
This will be work and fun, a space for me to muse on the things that inspire me at that particular moment.
Enjoy, engage, say hello.
